1. Cut out two equally sized ovals or rectangles for the headdress. Cut three pairs of rectangles for the bow - two large (one longer, A, and one slightly shorter B) and one little pair - "Center".

2. Sew all of the detailing on the top of each pair, including the center if you want.



3. Pin lace facing downwards and inwards along the edges of the top pieces. Corners are tricky so try and make sure the lace doesn't get all caught in the seam (sometimes this is unavoidable though).



4. Pin the bottom piece to the top with the right sides facing each other (the right side is the one you want facing outwards on the final product).



5. Sew together leaving a space to pull the fabric inside out. On the headdress this will be an inch or two at the ends. On bow peices A and B the bottom piece can be cut in half so that the fabric can be pulled through but the opening won't be visible once the center peice is wrapped around it.



6. Flip inside out (after removing all the pins :P). The open ends of the headdress will be sewn up and the openings in the bow peices will be covered by the center.



7. Cut ribbon for securing the headdress to your head. Make sure the peice is long enough to go around your head and tie in a bow. Cut the ribbon for the headdress in half and seal the ends of the ribbon with glue or no-fray.

8. Attach the ribbons. Tuck in the edges at the opening of the headdress and sew it shut with the ribbon tucked in as well. Place bow B and A together with the ribbon below A. Circle the center piece around the middle of the three and handstitch together.

*Please note these are not for the easy, one-layer headdresses and hairbows. These are for those of you who don't mind using a little more fabric to make a more professional-looking hair accessory that sits on your head a little better.

       The headdress is probably the easiest Lolita item for a beginning sewer to start with; it's not too complicated, you can make your own pattern if necessary, and the materials are inexpensive so you don't have to worry about messing up. And speaking of materials, here's

what you'll need:

1. Lace for the edge of the headdress
2. Pins
3. Scissors
4. A pattern and 3 cutouts of the pattern
5. Ribbon
6. Decoration (optional)
7. Material (not pictured)
8. Sewing machine or hand sewing materials (not pictured)

All of these can be in whatever color you choose, I chose black.   



        To start, pin your pattern to your material and cut out 3 pieces. Take 2 of them and pin the “wrong sides” together, this will make our top piece. Sew around the edges, starting on one of the straight edges, not the round corners. Leave a small opening and flip the fabric inside-out. Then, tuck the edges in and sew up the hole.



Now that the top piece is finished, this is the best time to add your top decoration if you have one. I would also suggest ironing the top piece so that it lays flat.



Next, you'll want to take the third pattern piece and trim it so that it's the same size as the top piece.



       Then, take about 30 inches of lace (may differ depending on how big you make your headpiece) and sew a gathering stitch (a stitch with a long length so that you can pull the strings to gather the lace). This helps the lace lie nicely around the rounded corners.



       After you're done with this, pin the lace to the bottom (third) pattern piece. Pull the gathering string to gather the lace at the edges. Sew the lace onto the bottom.



       The last step will be to sew the bottom and top pieces together. Pin the top piece to the bottom piece. Be sure to pull the top piece tight to the edges so that there are no bubbles and add the ribbon between the 2 pieces so that you can tie it to your head. After this is done, you just sew them together! Now you have a beautiful headdress! You can add flowers, appliqués, or anything else you want as well. I added some bows to mine. ^_^       

In case you're wondering why I use 3 pattern pieces, I just think it makes the headdress look nicer. You can sew the lace directly to the bottom of the top piece if you like, but I've found that the stitches are much cleaner looking if you hide them on the bottom piece. Also, if you mess up on the lace part, you don't have to start all over if you use a third piece.
